A couple days ago I was asked this very interesting question. “What are you working on with your family?” I thought about it and replied, “To be a family that values humility and simplicity.”
A couple of things to consider. First, the very smart man that asked me the question that understood we should be working on something, all the time, in our families. We are all works in progress. Key word is work.
- We work on our careers.
- We work at our hobbies.
- We work on building better lives.
- Some even work on not working.
But I think many are missing the most important work, which is the work in and on our families. I recently heard Andy Stanley at a conference say this “The most important thing may not be what you do but who you raise.” Wow…My most important job is raising my kids in a Christ centered home.
Joshua 24:15 But if serving the Lord seems undesirable to you, then choose for yourselves this day whom you will serve, whether the gods your ancestors served beyond the Euphrates, or the gods of the Amorites, in whose land you are living. But as for me and my household, we will serve the Lord.”
This verse has been a cornerstone for my leading my family.
Second, I have to think. It’s not very wise to just cruise through life without really thinking. What are you thinking on? I see far too many people just following with society and not really stopping to think. When it the last time you really took time to think deeply? You don’t have to answer, I already know.
- We think about business plans
- We think about weekend plans
- We think about vacations
But why do so few think about the most important things like our family and what we are all about?
So I will ask you, what are you working on with your family?
